Calcium sulfate (CaSO4), also known as plaster of Paris, is an osteoconductive crystalline substance used for bone void fillers and for cranial defects. Reports of in vivo use of calcium sulfate include deposition of cancellous host bone while the graft substance is resorbed.31 Calcium sulfate is not suitable for structural support clinical applications due to its rapid biodegradability. Clinically, it is used in forms of pellets alone or in combination with other substances. Interestingly, as calcium sulfate dissolves, it acidifies the local environment resulting in antimicrobial action. Some of the calcium precipitates with local phosphate ions as HA, creating a microscaffold for osteoconduction within the defect.32
